Richmond, Va. — A 540-bed student housing complex called 8 ½ Canal Street has opened at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Developed by Gilbane Development Co., the property was 100 percent pre-leased prior to its opening for the 2011-2012 academic year. The 285,000-square-foot, eight-story community is located across the street from VCU’s Monroe Park Campus expansion and is less than one-half mile from the center of the VCU campus. The community includes two parking levels with 200 parking spaces. Amenities include a 24-hour fitness center, a cyber café, a gaming center and a clubhouse. Each apartment space comes with a 42-inch flat screen television, modern furniture and wood-style flooring.
