Boone, N.C. — Appalachian State University approved a new campus master plan that will add significant new on-campus student housing.

Boone, N.C. — Late last week the Board of Trustees for Appalachian State University approved the Campus Master Plan 2020. Among other initiatives, the master plan includes a significant expansion of the university’s on-campus housing stock. The plan calls for seven construction projects that could add up to 1,755 new beds.

Tentative projects include three unnamed residence halls, one of which could include a dining hall, containing 455 beds. A second Living Learning Community will contain 300 beds as well as academic space. The new Center for Student Leadership will contain 500 beds, and an addition to the existing Justice Hall will add 60 beds to the building. One project already under way is the construction of the 440-bed Mountaineer Hall. The dorm will be built on the site of the former Mountaineer Apartments community, which will close in May and be razed shortly thereafter. If all of the residential projects proposed in the master plan come to fruition, they will total approximately 596,000 square feet of new construction.

With these new residential projects, Appalachian State hopes to achieve its goal of providing on-campus housing for 40 percent of the student body. In addition the new residence halls, the master plan has the option for additional housing on the northeastern edge of campus. The projects would consist of privately developed, mixed-use buildings with residential units over retail space. These projects are even more tentative that the residence halls, since the properties are currently not on the market for sale.
