Kingston, R.I. — The University of Rhode Island (URI) has commenced development of a new on-campus residence hall. Hillside Hall will be a $42 million project that will provide 429 beds for freshmen and sophomore students. It is replacing the 90-bed Terrace Apartments on Baird Hill Road. The new dorm will feature two wings linked by a four-story, glass bridge that will contain a connecting central staircase and two-story lounges with views of a landscaped courtyard. The project is also being designed to LEED-Silver specifications. Sustainable features will include the use of recycled construction materials, a rooftop solar hot water system, energy-efficient HVAC systems, indoor bicycle storage and energy monitors in the main lobby. In addition, Hillside Hall will house the new offices of the Department of Housing and Residential Life. The project architects are Providence, R.I.-based Lerner Ladds + Bartels and St. Louis-based Mackey Mitchell. Completion is anticipated in 2012.
